Navigated TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation)

Navigated TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) can be used in a diagnostic setting for patients who are planning to undergo neurosurgery for brain tumors or other lesions that are in close proximity to areas of the brain essential for movement or language. Your neurosurgeon would recommend navigated TMS for pre-surgical planning to map your brain before neurosurgery. A brain MRI is first obtained which will show the size and location of a tumor, lesion, or epilepsy focus, however, the MRI itself does not provide enough information to determine the function of the brain tissue that is in close proximity to the lesion. Brain mapping with navigated TMS provides your physician useful diagnostic information for planning neurosurgery including determining whether surgery is a safe option, helping to preserve areas of the brain essential for movement or language, allowing more tumor to be removed (higher resection rate) and may help with better surgical outcomes.
